Holistic Dentistry Explained

In this video, Raymond G. Hatland, DDS, explains how his holistic approach guides the way he diagnoses, treats, and supports long-term oral health.

Many patients ask what holistic dentistry means. In my practice, it refers to a biologically, physiologically, and energetically informed approach that uses natural methods whenever possible and minimizes medications. The goal is to support overall health, not just treat isolated dental issues.

One area where this approach stands out is gum disease. I focus on training patients to reverse their own periodontal pockets. Deep pockets (5, 7, 8, or even 10 millimeters) can often be reduced to 2, 3, or 4 millimeters, effectively eliminating active gum disease. It’s not a one-time fix; it’s a long-term, teachable system of care.

I also treat TMJ problems by helping patients achieve natural muscle relaxation and correcting bite issues. Many people grind their teeth because the bite is off, and the body’s stress response tries to compensate through tension. Restoring a proper bite shifts the body back toward a healing state instead of a stress-driven pattern that wears down teeth and joints.

I also provide mini dental implants, drawing on more than 50 years of implant experience and applying the same principles of long-term oral health.
